Green Zone Training

green zone logo

Green Zone training is for faculty and staff desiring to learn more about the military affiliated student experience. Its goals are to train members of the UNCG community to know more about the issues and concerns faced by military affiliated students and to identify individuals who are available to assist this population. These individuals are not expected to be experts who can “solve problems.” They are individuals who can lend a sympathetic ear and help the student veteran identify and connect with the appropriate resources.

MAnn-Callahan Veterans’ Scholarship

The Mann-Callahan Veterans’ Endowed Scholarship was created by former Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs, Cheryl “Cherry” Callahan.  Dr. Cheryl (Cherry) Callahan is an alumna of The University of North Carolina Greensboro having received her BA in Sociology in 1971 and later her PhD in Human Development and Family Studies in 1987. She served the University in various administrative roles in the Division of Student Affairs from 1979-2018. Cherry has also been actively involved in the Greensboro community and served on numerous boards while also holding leadership positions in various service and professional organizations.

Cherry lost a nephew in Iraq and his brother was so moved by what he experienced during that time that he joined the Army and now has a career in the service. He is a Major in the US Army and is stationed at Fort Liberty. Cherry’s father also served in the US Army for many years – first as active duty when he served in Germany and then as she grew up, he was in the Army Reserves when he retired as a Lieutenant Colonel.

All of this led her to create the Veterans’ Center when she was serving as Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. Prior to that, the University only had a liaison who worked with veterans and other military affiliated students on their benefits. She wanted to see the veterans’ experience go beyond that and provide them with a resource center that was designed to support them while at UNCG. Her team pieced together funding and space and hired its first coordinator to make this Center a reality. Now it is called Military-Affiliated Services. Cherry’s commitment to veterans has grown over the years and it is her desire to provide scholarship support for UNCG veterans.
